Can’t do the next progression#1696

A

I’ve been working on the pull up progressions and I have reached 3 sets of 30 for the horizontal pulls ups. It does leave me pretty sore but I felt like I’m confident on them, so I progressed to the advanced horizontal pull ups but I’ve immediately hit a wall. The next goal is 2 sets of 10 but I can’t even do 5, and I can only do maybe 1-2 with good form. Should I just keep doing the previous one or should I keep trying the harder one?

Should I keep trying the harder progression or do the easier one?

Hey. This is Chrys, one of the trainers at Hybrid.

That’s normal, and it doesn’t mean you picked the wrong progression. When you jump to the advanced horizontal pulls, the difficulty spikes a lot, so going from 30 reps to barely a few clean ones is expected. The best move here is to keep the easier version as your main work while sprinkling in the harder one. Do most of your volume with the regular horizontal pulls, then add a few high-quality reps of the advanced version at the start or end of the session. Over time those 1 to 2 clean reps will turn into 3, then 5, then full sets. If you drop the easier version completely, progress usually stalls. This way you keep building strength without hitting a wall.
