Question on level progression#1842

I’m trying my best to make sure that I’m staying honest with myself so that I’m not just chasing reps and trying to make sure that I’m following the routine so that I’m actually making progress. In the spirit of that, I had a question about best practice for building up to the level milestones for each excercise.

If, say, I’m on Level 1 of push-ups, do I do as many reps as I can until faliure for the first set, and if I can’t reach the target reps for that set, I stop at the one set and move on? Or do I do as many as I can for 2 sets until faliure and move on? Or, at that Level, should I do as many as I can for all 3 sets until faliure, even if I haven’t reached Level 1 mastery, for the sake of doing as many reps as I am able to for that workout over 3 sets, even at Level 1?

I want to make sure that I’m working toward building muscle properly without overloading my muscles too much and causing me to lose more progress than I’m gaining.
